Dog food content?

Good evening.  I have a 6.5 year-old greyhound.  I'd been feeding him Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice for the past 3.5 years.  He had no problems until this spring when he started having bloody stools and diarrhea.  (No lethargy or loss of appetite.)  I took him to the vet who treated him for colitis.  There was improvement (no more blood), but he would still have diarrhea.  I thought he might be getting a more sensitive digestive tract as he ages, so switched him (gradually) to Nutro Natural Choice Chicken, Oatmeal, and Rice for Sensitive Stomachs. He's been doing better, though with loose stools more often than in the past.  I've found many recent complaints about Nutro citing bloody stool and diarrhea at

Food

Hi Meg,

You've opened up a real can of worms here... it's all up to doggie preference and budget and personal preference.  There is a website that I'm sure someone will chime in with that does dog food reviews, but take that with a grain of salt- they only give really high marks to stuff that wouldn't be very good for your grey due to the protein levels.  We struggled with loose stools with our Rider until we discovered Natural Balance limited diet foods- they really helped him.  I'm sure there will be lots of good info to follow here, but that's our experience.

Welcome to the board!

Chris

I've always liked either

I've always liked either Science Diet, Eukanuba or Iams. My dogs have done well on Eukanuba Large breed for the past 2 years.

Food

remember Nutro is only a medium grade food.  I recomend wellness or eagle pack there all naturla and holistic.  Eukanuba food quality has dropped the last few years since they were bought out by Procter and Gamble. I have a done a great deal of reshearch on dog foods.

food allergies

Several years ago I had a Doberman who was fed Science Diet for the first 2 1/2 yrs of his life. he got very ill. Vomiting & the bloody "D". I took him to Michigan State University and it was discovered he had food allergies. he was treated with about 8 weeks of prednosone then food was changed to Sinceable Choice .

You may want to have him  tested at the vet, may be cheaper in the long run to know exactly what he needs vs guessing.

Good luck,

food

IWe used Canidae till they changed formulas.  We  switched to a brand made in Maryland and it has worked out great for our boy.  Its VERUS and you can check their web at:   veruspetfoods.com    Wellness is also a good quality food.

Meg,I used Nutro Lamb and

Meg,

I used Nutro Lamb and Rice on all my  dogs for the last 17 year; I even worked for them until last March. That having been said, the Lamb and Rice formula was recently changed from Lamb MEAL to Lamb (meanig whole lamb b4 the fat and water was rendered out). Quite a diffrence in the amount of lamb protein. Also added was pea and potato proteins (so the overall protein amount was the same, the quality was obviously different) My dogs who had used L&R ever since thery were adopted developed loose stools.

I switched to Nutro Max beef meal and rice. Beef and Lamb are about the same from a protein value standpoint. Neither of my dogs can tolerate any form of chicken without getting the runs. They love the Beef Meal and rice, tolerate it very well and it costs less! I do add about 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt to their dry kibble to calm some of the bad bacteria these dogs normally have running around in their tummies (but I've been doing that for years, even on the Lamb and Rice).

Hope that helps

Lee

Mine have always been on

Mine have always been on Nutro, first it was Chicken and Rice, and did very well.  When my Toby developed EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency) I switched all of them to Nutro's Venison and Brown Rice and sometimes I mix it up and get Nutro's Herring and Brown Rice.  They are all doing really well, especially Toby.

Thanks!

Hey, all. Thank you for your input. Before posting here, I read so many very different views that I was dizzy! Pretty unreal the variety of views on food: one website said NO LAMB!, while others recommend lamb highly; some say the best solution is to home cook everything, while others claim that the best way to ensure food provides enough nutrients is to get bagged food; some say protein should be 22-27% (http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/feeding-your-retired-racing-greyhound-a-nutritious.), and others say some other amount. It can be pretty overwhelming, and I consider myself fairly experienced with rearing a greyhound! (He's my second, but my parents have been adopting them since I was 16.)

I've been using California Natural for a week now, and Kyle seems to be doing well. (And he actually likes it. He's never cared much for food after the first couple bowls from a fresh bag. I've often had to sweeten the deal with a little yogurt or vegetable juice or chicken for him to be excited about eating.) We have a vet check-up next week, but we've at least found a winner for now!

We use Pro Plan Chicken and Rice dry and Pro Plan wet food.

When we got Buddy he was on Nutro and he started having really bad farts and that.  When we got Peanut she came with a small sample of Pro Plan and buddy loved it.  Peanut would not eat the Nutro.  So we Switched to Pro Plan and have not had any problems in the 5 yrs that they ahve been on it.

Hope all goes well with Kyle and the new food.

Take care
Jyl

tried them all

and about a year ago I said to kathe lets go back to Pro Plan and they all did fine.  We have put a few on the raw diet but the others has stayed on Pro Plan and are doing well.  We use the beef and rice.  We are with the Pro Plan club and for every 600 pounds we use we get 10 coupons worth $7 each so that helps plus it seems at the loacl pet smart if you have one of their pet perks cards you can get between $4 to $6 off.

Some dog food manufacturers

Some dog food manufacturers can be quite devious and will often use very clever nuances in the title and also in arrangement of words on the label that can be very different to what the dog food actually contains. Also, there is an important component to this, these rules relate just to solid material in the dog food and do not address the moisture levels.food coupons
