Heartworm

Yet another Heartworm diagnosis at work yesterday. This is such a horrible disease and so easily prevented. Most preventatives only cost about $10-$15 a month. Treatment can cost up to $1000. The treatment is very hard on the dogs...this owner chose to euthanize. Very sad.

So sad

Linda, I agree,

this had to be so sad for those of you working there.

People can get a generic HW pill and the cost can be as low as$18.00 to $25.00 for a 6 month supply for a 51-100 lb dog. My vet is good to us and sells me the Intorceptor for 30.00/6 pills. But she has written me perscriptions to get the generic form before as well.

I keep our dogs on year around since we get soem warme enough days in the winter to see the pesky mosquitos here in Michigan.

Even though sad, it is better to euthanize then to let the dog die of the heart worms. I hope that owner learned something and for future pets will use the pills.

That sounds like a nasty

That sounds like a nasty thing for dogs to get and such a shame if it is so easily preventable. Luckily this is something we don't have here in the UK, though it is in parts of Europe so dogs travelling abroad from here need to take care I expect.

This little dog was only 30

This little dog was only 30 lbs. It would have cost $7 a month to prevent.  HW preventatives also act as a monthly dewormer for intestinal parasites like roundworms, which are everywhere it seems. People don't want to spend the $ but yet end up paying hundreds for the exam and test when the dog gets sick, as well as the cost of treatment or euthanasia.

In the United States, one

In the United States, one common canine disease is dog heartworm. Dog heartworm was first discovered in 1856. Heartworms in dogs are often found residing in the dog's heart and the major blood vessels. Years ago, it was believed that short-haired dogs were more prone to becoming infected by dog heartworms. Using heartguard for dogs is the safest way to keep our dogs safe and healthy.

How very sad.  Liz
