Poor Mercedes had to go to the vet this morning for x-rays of her toe. It's been swollen for over two weeks now and antibiotics did not help. It hurt her when we first noticed it but now she's running and walking like nothing is wrong. But we need to know what is going on so x-rays were the next step. Poor baby loves her food and couldn't have breakfast this morning just in case she needs to be sedated to get good pics. So she was crying for breakfast before we left for the vet. She's there now and I felt really awful leaving her there. But as i rounded the van and opened the door - there on the ground was a - PENNY - I picked it up, smiling to myself and said "Duncan - you sure know how to make Mommy feel better"!! He lifted my spirits and I knew he was telling me he'd be with her while she was there!! That boy always could make me feel better no matter what!! More on Mercedes after I hear from the vet -

Donna - I have no doubt that

Donna - I have no doubt that Duncan sent you that sign and that he will be with Mercedes while she is at the vet.  I also hope it is another sign from Duncan that Mercedes will be fine and she just sprained her toe or something else not serious.  Please do let us know the results of the xray.  Keeping you both in my prayers.

Not good news -

Mercedes has a tumor in her toe - the vet said the bone does not appear to be involved but she is not ruling out osteo. They did an aspiration and we are waiting to hear what type of cancer cells they find. If they do find cancer cells we will x-ray her lungs and then decide whether to proceed with amputation of the toe. Poor baby - I think it is just destiny that these cancer babies find their way to us - will keep you informed -

We're waiting -

for lab results but the toe will come off next week for sure. We've put her back on Deramax because it is bothering her today. Unfortunately our vet has been struggling with decisions about her own puppy less than a year old - he had to be put to sleep today - he had meningitis and they couldn't get it under control. So she will be out until Monday - we'll make final plans when she returns - hopefully it is contained to the toe. We're hoping the lab can identify the cells so we know what we're dealing with. Meanwhile Mercedes is doing okay -

I hope.....

I hope things work out well for Mercedes.

Sending prayers

I hope by Duncan sending the penny, that Mercedes will be alright. Hopefully the doctor will get it all by removing the tow and your little girls will have her whole life ahead of her.

Mercedes surgery Friday

Mercedes toe amp will be on friday - lab results from the aspirations were inclusive - they couldn't identify the cells - but the toe must come off regardless - it will be sent for further testing after the surgery. Thanks for all the good thoughts for our girl - prayers would be appreciated on Friday.

Donna

Donna,

We had to have Smudge's toe amputated last March, due to an injury.  It's not as bad as it seems.  Hoping that once Mercedes' toe is gone, that will be the end of it.  You'll just need to bag it when she goes out, to keep it clean and dry.  We also had to muzzle Smudge when we weren't sitting in the room with him.  He would sneak off into a bedroom to get away of our watchful eyes, so he could take his bandage off!

I'm a definite believer in the pennies from heaven.  That's how our bridge kids sent us our newest Greyhound...."Penny."

Hey Donna....been there....

Hey Donna,

We certainly hope all goes well for Mercedes! We have been thru that "toe amputation experience" years back with Rich's border collie.  Hopefully, you caught it early.  Jack was able to quickly make the adjustment as I am certain Mercedes will!!

It is really odd that you were writing about Duncan's pennies....I had been thinking of that over the weekend.  I don't know what possessed it to come to mind...perhaps thinking of the many older boy and girl houndies that have passed....those who have definitely held our hearts.

We will keep Mercedes in our thoughts and prayers.  It was terrific meeting all of you at GIG.
